. >> this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, october 1, 2012. >>> good morning. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. this morning in afghanistan the taliban is claiming responsibility for a suicide attack that killed at least 14 people, including three nato service members. a suicide bomber riding a motorcycle rammed into a patrol. americans have a large presence there. nato is trying to sort out a weekend attack in afghanistan that left two americans dead. the casualties push the number of u.s. personnel killed in afghanistan to 2,000. the circumstances of saturday's violence remains unclear but a fire fight broke out at a checkpoint in eastern afghanistan. what nato hasn't determined so far was the gun battle a result of an insider attack or a deadly misunderstanding. drew levinson reports. >> reporter: this weekend marked the deadly milestone in afghanistan. 2,000 american soldiers killed since the war began nearly 11 years ago. it happened at a checkpoint in the eastern part of the country. one american soldier, an american contractor and three afghan soldiers were killed in a fire fight.

spoke with cbs5. >> once they were in the water, they started getting pounded by additional waves. and two actually made it to shore and two are still outstanding. the problem was a delay in the search. it happened at 10:00, but one of the suspects were self- rescued. able to crawl to make their way up to the farmhouse where we are at right now and call 911. so there is about an hour delay. >> reporter: the boat left the candle stick marina about 5:30 this morning. taken out to the golden gate and about two miles north. it was there that the boat was struck by the wave. and the sergeant gonzalez says that it was about an hour later that a call came into the sheriff's office. the coast guard sent aircrafts and two boats, an 87 boater and a smaller boat. they joined in on the operations, including the state parks, san mateo county fire and the california office of the emergency services. at sunset, the search continued with boats, helicopters, and a c130 aircraft, topping flares into the -- dropping flares into the ocean to see which way the currents would carry them. on the coast,

president of the united states bill clinton in conversation with me and my colleague at cbs nora o'donnell. >> rose: do you think this election the president has said that change has to come from outside rather than in washington, that this election has the possibility of producing a change that will be able to overcome gridlock. >> i don't think it to the only has the possibility, i think it almost certainly will. and let me explain why. i think the president's going to win but let's assume governor romney won. if he wins, that almost certainly means the republicans will hold on to the house and it will be about 50/50 in the senate, more or less the way it is now. you can't filibuster a budget. it's the only thing that doesn't require 60 votes in the senate to pass o as opposed to 51. so a lot of the policymaking will be pushed into the budget and he'll just have to pick up one or two people on that. if you assume that he is going to do what he said he's going to do, i think a lot of his priorities will be enacted. and i think it will be bad on the budget side, as i said. includin

to approach them with a lot of skepticism. in ohio last week, we had cbs/"new york times" poll saying ten points for obama. and a columbus dispatch poll saying nine points. frank newport the head of the gallup organization had a blog posting that was revealing. he said you have to subject the state polls to the judgment of experience. he said for example, take ohio. the president won there by less than five points last time around. this time around, the poll that said he is winning by ten, does it make sense he would do twice as well, the margin is twice as big this time around than it was in 2008 when everybody is pointing to closer election than in 2008. of course not. it doesn't make sense. take this with the nevada and ohio shifts because of outlier polls. p.p.p. interestingly enough had a poll that was the outlier in nevada, plus nine for obama. then two polls in ohio. as a result they move it across the line from tossup to lean obama. i would say this, though. step back just a little bit and look at the arch since april. president obama has gone from 220 solid states, electoral coll
